Our Story – Rooted in Purpose

It is often in life’s most difficult seasons that purpose begins to take shape.
Miracle Comfrey began during a time of significant personal and financial hardship. While living on a horse farm where comfrey was cultivated for racehorses, Sanet developed a growing interest in medicinal plants, especially Symphytum officinale, the comfrey plant.

About a year later the family relocated to a different farmhouse, water was so scarce that household water had to be collected from town, 10 kilometres away. Sanet could only keep a few herbal plants alive of which were six comfrey plants, she had bought at a local market.

During this same period, emotional strain became overwhelming. In her lowest moment, Sanet turned to God and experienced His love and goodness in a deeply personal way. She made a simple prayer, that her life would be used to reflect that same love and goodness to others.

She did not yet realise that her small comfrey plants would become part of that answer.

From Six Plants to a Farm Kitchen

When the family relocated to Patensie in the Gamtoos Valley, those six comfrey plants came with. In a local library, Sanet discovered a simple comfrey cream recipe. Early attempts were humble and experimental, and without knowledge of preservation systems, shelf life proved to be a challenge.

But there was a clear intention from the beginning:

• To build a business rooted in integrity
• To manage it ethically
• To create a product that was affordable and accessible
• To prove that success does not require dishonesty or harsh practices

Around 1999, in a small farm kitchen, Miracle Comfrey Ointment was born. Production was entirely hands-on, from cultivating the comfrey plants to preparing each jar. Even the family coffee carried a faint herbal aftertaste.
Sanet personally recorded feedback from every jar shared. The responses were encouraging and consistent, particularly for a wide range of everyday skin concerns.

One early turning point came when a school principal suggested the ointment to a parent whose child was struggling with visible skin discomfort. The noticeable improvement over a single weekend encouraged the mother to suggest something simple: “You should start a business.”

And so she did.

A Growing Calling

Word began to spread. Families shared their experiences. Pharmacies and health shops showed interest. What started as handwritten notes and small batches quickly outgrew the kitchen.

A single newspaper advertisement featuring customer feedback generated so many orders that within a week, Sanet made the difficult decision to resign from teaching and commit to producing ointment full time.
The business formally began in 2001 and was registered in 2002.

From Farm Kitchen to ISO-Certified Facility

Today, Miracle Comfrey has grown into an ISO-certified South African manufacturer supplying pharmacies, health shops, wholesalers, distributors and customers nationwide through its online and factory store.

While production methods have evolved and systems have been refined, the heart of the business remains unchanged:

• Organically grown comfrey plant extract (Symphytum officinale)
• Herbal-based topical skincare
• Fragrance- and colourant-free formulations
• Products suitable for normal, sensitive and problem skin
• A commitment to integrity in every aspect of the business

What began with six resilient plants and a prayer has become a proudly South African herbal skincare company, still rooted in purpose, still guided by faith, and still committed to serving families with care.

Miracle Comfrey was never only about a product.

It was and remains about hope, perseverance, and building something meaningful from even the smallest beginnings.
